Best Places To Travel In September
The summer crowds have faded, and while the blistering heat is less intense the days are still long and warm. Wondering where to take your travels this September? The first month of fall is a wonderful “shoulder season” time to travel. Here are the best places to travel in September.
AMALFI COAST | italy
SEE One of the most sought-after destinations in the country, the Amalfi Coast is a sparkling, colorful collection of fishing villages turned luxury destinations perched on the clifftops that surround the Mediterranean Sea. While it only stretches 30 miles, the Amalfi Coast offers so much Italian charm and idyllic beauty that it really could be its own trip. September is an ideal time to visit this seaside destination, as the summer crowds have dwindled yet the water still remains warm and most venues and hotels are still open for business. Be sure to spend at least one day on the island of Capri, which was once known as the holiday destination for the stars in the 1950s and 60s, it still retains much of its old-world, glamorous charm.
STAY Casa Angelina One of our favorite properties along the coast is Casa Angelina. Offering a “sublime slice of modern minimalism” and “an airy refuge” it is one of our top recommendations to clients. With just 42 guest rooms, Casa Angelina is a clean sanctuary after a day exploring the coast in the sun. The property seems to almost hover above the Mediterranean, and its special location in Praiano gives it the longest days of sun of any other hotel on the coast. We adore the Deluxe Corner Sea View room, which was just opened last year. The white-washed space features pops of turquoise and sea views from every room in the suite.
BALI | indonesia
SEE September is one of the best months to visit the lush island of Bali. Thanks to summer-like temperatures and virtually no rainfall, the mobs of tourists have left, and hotel prices have dropped a bit in response. A favorite among wellness seekers and the culturally curious, Bali means different things to different visitors. The island’s famous gardens, lush terraced rice fields, soaring volcanoes, surfing spots and temples will give you more than enough options to explore. Also not to miss are the funky local shops and food markets in downtown Canggu and the quiet, peaceful jungles of the more remote inland district, Ubud.
STAY Amandari For a truly sensory experience, we can’t recommend Amandari enough. Designed after a traditional Balinese village on the edge of the Ayung River Gorge, this property offers free-standing guest suites connected by winding pathways with rice paddies below. When you retire from trekking through Bali’s countryside trails or mountain biking through rice paddies, the Amandari suite welcomes you home with its own private plunge pool and view of the adjacent valley.
CAPPADOCIA | turkey
SEE While this vast region in the middle of Turkey is known for the over 100 hot-air balloons that fill the sky each morning, the otherwordly landscape and warm people are worth the visit themselves! With mushroom-capped fairy chimneys, natural travertine sculptures and entire buildings carved out of stone, this destination is a marvel. September is an ideal time to visit, the fall chill hasn’t quite creeped in but the crowds have left. Once you’ve done your balloon ride, be sure to visit the ancient cave village of Cavusin and Uçhisar Castle, with panoramic views of the entire region. If you really want to get moving, the Ihlara Valley is famous for its picturesque hiking and Pigeon Valley offers interesting rock formations along its route, both which can also be done on horseback if your feet need a breather.
STAY Ariana Sustainable Luxury Lodge Located atop of the Uçhisar Valley, this warm, luxurious boutique property offers a special perspective of Cappadocia. With traditional cave suites among space for small groups, it is a perfect option for couples and families alike. Our favorites space is the Ishtar Duplex Suite, which offers a loft-style layout, with separate living room and private deck overlooking the vast desert landscape. The hotel offers multiple activities from pottery making to winemaking and is happy to recommend hikes and trails in the area.
PRAGUE | czech republic
SEE A nearly perfectly preserved Castle District, winding Vitava river and quaint Old Town draw tourists by the thousands each year to Prague. However, when the summer glow fades the once crowded streets feel a bit more like they did in the 15th century. You’ll still find all attractions and restaurants are open, but with less rush and frantic hustle that can be the peak of season. Nicknamed “the city of a hundred spires” Prague features a medieval downtown and cheerful European buildings that have been lovingly preserved to how they looked the day they were built. The city itself has been named a UNESCO World Heritage site with its narrow streets and large public squares, that just beg to be explored. Prague is also known for its hearty local cuisine of potato and garlic coups, fried cheese, and beef goulash, that feel more natural when there’s a slight chill in the air.
STAY Augustine Located in the picturesque heart of Prague, this boutique property was born from seven different historic buildings including the 13th-century Augustinian Saint Thomas Monastery after which the hotel is named. A few practicing friars still call the monastery home. Guests will benefit from the property’s extensive private gardens and its proximity to the Prague’s most notable monuments and historic Old Town. Our favorite space in the hotel is the iconic Tower Suite, located on a corner of the building covering over two floors, with a winding staircase leading to the bedroom which has stunning views of the castle nearby.
